Public Safety and Tougher Crime Penalties in Beaumont

A look at prosecutor statements and efforts to address crime

In response to a recent surge in violent crime, including a shooting at Rogers Park, Jefferson County prosecutors and judges are signaling a shift toward tougher prosecution and sentencing. They acknowledge the community's demand for stronger consequences.

District Attorney Keith Giblin emphasized his office's commitment to a harder line as violence becomes more prevalent. He stated, "For some reason, violence is more prevalent. And we have to take some steps to protect our community."

This stance was evident when Judge Raquel West sentenced 18-year-old Caden Fontenette to 25 years in prison for aggravated robbery. The case involved a terrorizing crime at a Nederland convenience store, captured on video. After the sentence was announced, family members reacted emotionally, prompting bailiffs to intervene.

Lead prosecutor Tommy Coleman advocated for a stiff punishment over probation, referencing the chaotic shooting at Rogers Park and other recent violent crimes. He remarked, "If they have an intention to commit a violent offense and pick a firearm, they need to know they also could be picking up a 15, 20, 25-year sentence."

In court, Coleman addressed Judge West, saying, "I know I'm preaching to the choir, judge. Prayer vigils and advisory committees, all that stuff is fine, but you, Judge, are where the rubber meets the road. You are that person that can protect the community from somebody like this defendant."

Judge West concurred, stating, "Mr. Coleman's right. We're tired of it, and there's got to be something done."

Giblin noted that the push for tougher sentencing extends beyond a single case. He said, "I think the time has come to be even more punitive on violent crime than we have been in the past and we have been. But we're going to ensure that justice is done."

Executive Assistant Brit Featherston highlighted Fontenette's sentence as indicative of future actions. He commented, "We saw today with that 25-year sentence, you know what consequences to your actions, and that's very, very tough. And I think we're going to see more of that in the future."

Judge West addressed Fontenette directly, saying, "Mr. Fontenette, I understand that this is harsh, and I know you believe that this is harsh, but I think that this is necessary."

Following the Rogers Park shooting, Giblin stated that his office and police are gathering information from victims and others affected. He said, "From my office, I can tell you right now, our investigators and the Police Department are talking to not only the victims that were shot in the incident at Rogers Park, but also people that were traumatized, people whose homes were hit, people who ran for cover. We're going to try to do everything that we can to address this situation."

A recent poll indicated that a majority of residents support stronger prosecution to reduce crime.
