Southeast Texas has more authors than you might think. Some write fiction. Some write memoirs. Some write children's books or devotionals or local history. And when they publish, they're not getting New York Times coverage. They're relying on people in their own community to show up and support them.
Earlier this week, local mother-daughter authors Monica and Alecea Walters held a book signing. Events like these matter. Not just for the authors, but for the readers who get to connect with the person behind the story.
If you see a local author event pop up, consider going. Buy the book. Get it signed. Ask a question. These are your neighbors. They're doing something brave: putting their work out into the world and hoping someone will care. The least we can do is show up.
