From Beaumont Central to America's Team: The Full-Circle Moment Cowboys Fans Have Been Waiting For |
One-year, $5 million deal brings hometown hero back to Texas
Beaumont Central graduate PJ Locke is coming home.
The 29-year-old safety signed a one-year, $5 million deal with the Dallas Cowboys on March 10, seven years after entering the NFL as an undrafted free agent nobody wanted.
"Man, it's such a surreal moment, a full circle moment," Locke told the Cowboys' official website. "My wife is from Fort Worth. My whole family grew up Cowboys fans. To be here and able to play for the home team is a blessing. It's such a miracle."
The Beaumont-to-Denver-to-Dallas Journey
Locke graduated from Beaumont Central High School before starring at the University of Texas from 2015 to 2018. When the 2019 NFL Draft came and went without his name called, the Pittsburgh Steelers signed him as an undrafted free agent, then cut him before the season started. Most players would've been done.
Locke got picked up by the Denver Broncos' practice squad in December 2019 and spent the next six seasons grinding his way from special teams contributor to starting safety. In 2024, he posted a career-best 15 starts and 74 tackles. He capped his Broncos tenure with an interception in Denver's playoff win against Buffalo in January 2025.
What Dallas Gets
The Cowboys are reuniting Locke with defensive coordinator Christian Parker, who coached him as Denver's defensive backs coach from 2021 to 2023. Parker knows exactly what Locke brings: physicality, football IQ, special teams excellence, and the kind of veteran presence that makes defenses better.
In 90 career NFL games, Locke has logged 174 tackles, four sacks, five forced fumbles, and two interceptions. He's not a superstar, but he's exactly the kind of proven depth piece championship teams need.
The Beaumont Connection
For Southeast Texas, this is more than just another NFL transaction. Beaumont has produced over 60 NFL players, earning the region its "Pro Football Capital of the World" nickname. Locke joins that legacy, and now he's wearing the star.
His message to Denver fans on social media captured what the move means: "For the past 7 years you guys have made Denver feel like home for my family and I. Things didn't work out business wise, but just know you guys hold a very very special place in my heart." Now the kid from Beaumont Central gets to play for the team his whole family cheered for growing up.
Full circle doesn't even cover it. |
