What's moving. Why it matters. Where you fit.

EDITION OPENER

Some things in this city take a decade to build, twenty years to prove, or one failed vote to redirect entirely. None of them happened because someone waited for permission first. This week is about the ones who didn't.

For over a decade, South Park resident Nathan Hawkins fought for real investment in Alice Keith Park — not just upkeep, but genuine transformation.

When a $264 million citywide bond proposition failed at the ballot last November, it looked like the end of the road for a project years in the making.

Hawkins didn't stop. He went directly to State Representative Christian Manuel, who secured a $1.9 million grant through Texas Parks and Wildlife via a legislative rider — and Beaumont City Council unanimously accepted the funds in February.

The money will fund new pavilions, playgrounds, basketball and pickleball courts, soccer and football fields, and renovated restrooms, along with a community center addition designed to give neighborhood kids more reasons to stay close to home.

The project is now part of Beaumont's five-year capital plan, anchored by an $11.2 million multipurpose recreation center planned for the site.

The Jim King TV Show, which first aired on July 16, 2006, is celebrating a remarkable double milestone — 20 years on air and its 1,000th episode.

For an independently produced regional television show, that kind of longevity is genuinely rare.

Over two decades, the show has interviewed musicians, entertainers, business owners, and community leaders while covering festivals and concerts across Southeast Texas, building a massive footage archive along the way.

That archive is now paying off in unexpected ways. Short-form clips repurposed for YouTube Shorts, Instagram, and TikTok are introducing the show to entirely new audiences — decades after the footage was first recorded.

What sets this apart as a Beaumont story is the independence behind it. No network. No parent company. Just one person building something bigger — right here at home.

The Proof is a series built on real stories from real people — the kind that never trend on Google but mean everything to a neighborhood.

Instead of waiting for the next subject to surface, we're asking you directly.

Know a Beaumont entrepreneur who deserves a spotlight?

It doesn't matter if they're brand new or twenty years in — we're looking for the food truck quietly building a following, the shop owner who's never sent a press release, the builder a neighbor mentions in passing.

Those are the stories worth telling.

Submit a tip using the standard tip form and put The Proof in the subject line.

We'll be back next week with someone real — thanks to you.
