Imagine being 17 years old and suddenly responsible for a job, salary, credit score, and a family dynamic you never chose.

This is the core of DuGood Credit Union’s Reality Fair, now underway for Beaumont students.

Each student receives a lifelike financial profile and must navigate decision-making booths — covering essentials like housing, groceries, and transportation — before balancing a final budget.

The unique twist? Students work in pairs, forcing real-world teamwork, negotiation, and compromise — a first for many teens.

As Rebecca Schexnyder from DuGood notes, this hands-on process exposes young people to the real challenges of shared financial decisions, an experience many only encounter as adults.

For some, it’s their first look at what life truly costs.

DuGood’s commitment, rooted in Beaumont since 1962, stands as a genuine investment in preparing local youth for financial independence.

Lamar Institute of Technology has earned national acclaim as one of the Most Promising Places to Work in Community Colleges, recognized by the National Institute for Staff and Organizational Development.

Only 27 institutions nationwide received this prestigious honor, shining a spotlight on LIT’s dedication to creating a supportive and engaging workplace.

The recognition celebrates LIT’s strengths in family friendliness, competitive salary and benefits, robust community engagement, and commitment to staff professional development.

For a Beaumont institution to make such a select national list is a significant achievement, highlighting the impact LIT continues to have on both employees and the broader community.

Concern is mounting over the challenges faced by young people in Beaumont.

Local leaders, educators, mental health experts, and nonprofit organizations are joining forces to address these issues.

Their proposal: a centralized SETX Youth Support Services Campus designed to support at-risk youth before legal intervention becomes necessary.

Jefferson County reVision, the lead group, has already guided hundreds away from the juvenile justice system in just three years.

The financial impact is striking.

Juvenile detention in Jefferson County costs $350,000 to $400,000 yearly per child, while prevention and treatment services at the new campus could be as little as $5,000 to $15,000 per year.

County commissioners recently reviewed the plan, with further discussions expected soon.

This innovative idea could mark a turning point for Beaumont’s youth.
