Southeast Texas Officials Urge Caution with Fireworks Amid Elevated Wildfire Risks |
Residents advised to prioritize safety during New Year's celebrations |
As Southeast Texas prepares to ring in the New Year, local authorities are emphasizing the importance of caution when using fireworks due to heightened wildfire risks.
Jefferson County had previously extended its burn ban for 90 days in October, citing ongoing drought conditions. This ban, which applied to unincorporated areas, prohibited open outdoor burning, with violations subject to fines up to $500. However, the ban was lifted in late October after improved conditions. Despite this, officials continue to stress the need for vigilance.
Fire officials highlight that the combination of dry vegetation and potential wind gusts can rapidly escalate small fires into uncontrollable blazes. Even a single spark from a firework landing on dry grass can ignite a significant fire.
Residents are encouraged to attend public fireworks displays conducted by professionals or to celebrate with non-flammable alternatives. If individuals choose to use fireworks, they should do so in open areas away from dry vegetation, have water sources readily available, and never leave fireworks unattended.
By exercising caution and adhering to safety guidelines, the community can enjoy festive celebrations while minimizing the risk of wildfires. |
