Beaumont Police Chief Tim Ocnaschek has data that might surprise you: violent crime in Beaumont is DOWN.
But if you scroll through neighborhood Facebook groups or listen to conversations at local coffee shops, you'd think the city was falling apart.
So what's the disconnect?
The Numbers vs. The Perception Chief Ocnaschek says the data tells a clear story - violent crime has decreased. Beaumont PD reported their second consecutive year of reduced violent crime, with a 100% homicide clearance rate in 2025. But perception? That's harder to shake.
Part of it is social media. One Ring doorbell video gets shared 500 times, and suddenly everyone "knows" crime is out of control. One scary headline sticks in your memory more than a hundred quiet, safe days.
Part of it is legitimate concern. Even if overall crime is down, if YOUR neighborhood feels less safe, or if YOU know someone who was a victim, statistics don't matter much.
What's Actually Happening Beaumont PD credits community tips and technology for the improvements. The 100% homicide clearance rate isn't luck - that's investigative work and community cooperation.
But here's the thing: fighting crime isn't just a police job. It's also community eyes, reported suspicious activity, lighting up dark streets, neighbors who know each other.
The Question If crime is actually down but FEELS worse, what changes that perception? More data? Better communication? Community involvement?
Maybe all three.
Your turn: Do YOU feel safer in Beaumont than you did a year ago? Five years ago? Hit reply - we're genuinely curious what the community thinks. |
