Beaumont ISD Appeals TEA's Decision Amid Potential State Takeover

District Leaders Seek to Retain Local Control Following TEA's Intervention Announcement

Beaumont Independent School District (BISD) officials are actively appealing the Texas Education Agency's (TEA) recent decision to assume control over the district.

During a school board meeting on Tuesday, Superintendent Dr. Shannon Allen announced that BISD would present additional information to TEA Commissioner Mike Morath, urging a reconsideration of the takeover plan.

Dr. Allen expressed her disappointment and frustration regarding the state's move, especially after Commissioner Morath's visit in September, which had left district leaders hopeful for a different outcome.

The TEA's decision stems from the district's accountability ratings, which revealed seven failing schools in the 2024-25 academic year.

Notably, Fehl-Price Elementary received its fifth consecutive failing grade, triggering mandatory state intervention.

Commissioner Morath faced two options: closing Fehl-Price Elementary or initiating a full district takeover.

He determined that closing a single school would not address the district's systemic issues, leading to the decision for a comprehensive takeover.

This marks the second instance of state intervention in BISD.

The district previously underwent a TEA takeover in 2014 due to financial mismanagement and governance concerns, regaining local control in 2020.

Despite the appeal, Dr. Allen emphasized BISD's commitment to professionalism and transparency throughout the process.

She assured that the district would cooperate fully with the TEA, maintaining a steadfast focus on student success.

Community members are encouraged to stay informed and engaged as the situation develops, recognizing the profound impact such decisions have on the educational landscape of Beaumont.
