The West End Just Won Something Two Years in the Making.

The Federal Railroad Administration has officially reinstated Beaumont's West End Quiet Zone. For the residents who never stopped saying something, the silence is finally coming.

Pat White has lived near the West End railroad tracks for decades. When the quiet zone was in place, she barely noticed the trains. When it was suspended in September 2024 and the horns started again, she noticed immediately.

"Sometimes some of the engineers like to really tell me they're coming," she told a local reporter.

She kept living there. She kept saying something. So did her neighbors. So did the business owners who watched customers leave and the property owners who could not get their units rented. For nearly two years, West End residents decided that being heard was worth the effort of staying loud.

This week the Federal Railroad Administration officially lifted the suspension of the West End Quiet Zone. Union Pacific Railroad has been notified. The City of Beaumont received formal confirmation. After eight rebuilt crossings, a $437,439 construction project, federal inspections, punch lists, and a final review in Washington, the ruling came through.

The horns are coming down.

Residents should know that the transition takes some time. Train engineers may still sound horns while the reinstatement information reaches all personnel, and engineers retain the right to sound their horns whenever they determine a safety concern exists. If routine horn sounding continues after the transition period, report it through 311.

But the ruling has been made. The suspension has been lifted. And here is the thought The Beaumont Current wants West End residents to sit with this week: your sustained, patient, consistent voice changed a federal outcome. What else in this city is waiting for that same kind of attention?
