Before the Bell Rings: Practical steps for a strong school year. |
Not the supply list. Not the giveaways. The decisions, systems, and habits that change how a school year goes before it even starts. |

The first day of school is almost here. Most families spend the final days buying supplies and hoping for the best. The families who actually feel ready spend them differently.
Here is what the days before school are actually for.
THE MORNING PROBLEM
THE LUNCH REALITY
THE CARPOOL NOBODY HAS
THE TUTORING TIMING MISTAKE
BEYOND THE SPORT
Beaumont Civic Ballet offers training for young dancers of all levels. The Art Studio of Southeast Texas at 720 Franklin Street has been building young artists since 1983. The Beaumont Children's Museum offers hands-on STEM programming. The Jonathan Williams Center for the Performing Arts runs performing arts training for children and adults. Tiger Rock Martial Arts at 3803 Calder builds discipline and character alongside physical fitness.
The child who finds their non-athletic thing often finds their identity with it. Ask the question before the season is already full.
FIRST DAY READY: THE CHECKLIST NOBODY GIVES YOU
Physical exam. Required for new students and kindergarteners in Texas. Recommended annually for everyone.
Up-to-date vaccination records. Texas requires specific vaccinations for school enrollment including meningococcal, Tdap, and varicella. Check with your pediatrician if you are unsure.
Emergency contact information. Not just a name and number. Schools need the relationship to the student, a cell phone AND a secondary number, who is specifically authorized to pick up the child, any medical conditions or allergies, and insurance information. Having this complete and accurate on day one matters.
Any required medications with a doctor's note authorizing the school to administer them.
Previous school records for new or transferring students.
Your child's specific school supply list. Published online by each individual campus. The general list is not always enough.
A confirmed transportation plan. Whether your child rides the bus, gets a carpool, or is a parent drop-off, everyone needs to know the plan before the first morning, not during it. |
