Breast Cancer Awareness Month is more than a reminder to wear pink; in Southeast Texas, it is an opportunity to connect neighbors with services that may save lives.

The Beaumont-based Gift of Life program offers eligible women free breast health screenings and diagnostic tests, helping reduce the financial barriers that can keep people from seeking care.

Its work includes cancer education and access to follow-up treatment for people in need across the region.

For anyone who has postponed a screening because of cost or uncertainty, a practical first step is to contact Gift of Life and ask about eligibility.

The organization is also bringing the community together for its Julie Richardson Procter 5K Ribbon Run Monster Dash on Saturday, October 31, at 701 Main Street in downtown Beaumont.

The celebration and wellness village begins at 8 a.m., followed by the 5K run and walk at 9 a.m..

Complimentary registration is offered to survivors of breast, ovarian and other gynecological cancers.

The event benefits Gift of Life's breast and ovarian cancer programs.

This October, consider sharing screening information with someone who may need it, checking in on a friend navigating treatment, or supporting an organization doing the work close to home.

Awareness matters most when it leads to access, care and community.
