Community Gathers to Honor Historic Event That Transformed the Energy Industry

On Saturday, January 10, 2026, at 9:30 a.m., the city of Beaumont, Texas, will host a ribbon-cutting ceremony at Spindletop Park to celebrate the 125th anniversary of the Spindletop oil discovery.

This pivotal event in 1901 marked the beginning of the modern petroleum era, significantly impacting both the local community and the global energy sector.

The Beaumont Heritage Society, in collaboration with Jefferson County and the Jefferson County Historical Commission, has organized this event to unveil new interpretive panels that narrate the story of Spindletop's transformation.

These panels feature historical photographs, firsthand accounts, and key milestones from the Spindletop era, offering an engaging and educational experience for visitors.

They will remain on display year-round and are accessible to the public at no cost.

In her book, "Giant Under the Hill: A History of the Spindletop Oil Discovery," co-author Judith Linsley remarked, "The Lucas Gusher changed the course of history, inaugurating a new fuel age. This site will preserve this important story for future generations."

Linsley will be present at the ceremony to share her insights on this significant anniversary.

The event is open to the public, and attendees can look forward to light refreshments and brief remarks from representatives of Jefferson County and partner organizations.

For those planning to attend, the entrance to Spindletop Park is located on the east side of West Port Arthur Road (Spur 93).

Heading south on West Port Arthur Road, it is 1.4 miles south of Highway 96, 287 (Cardinal Drive).

Heading north on West Port Arthur Road, it is 1.5 miles north of Highway 3514.
