what's moving

Edition 27 | May 13, 2026

Barbara Lynn, the legendary soul and blues singer, has been a Beaumont icon for decades—quietly shaping American music from her East Texas hometown.

Born in Beaumont in 1942, she wowed audiences as a left-handed guitarist and songwriter, forming her first band, Barbara Lynn and The Idols, while still in school.

In 1962, her hit “You’ll Lose a Good Thing” topped the Billboard R&B charts, later covered by Aretha Franklin and The Rolling Stones.

Her remarkable career included touring with Chuck Berry, Stevie Wonder, and other music greats, but she never left her roots.

This week, at age 84, Lynn was finally inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame in Memphis, cheered on by three generations of her family and friends.

Beaumont has always known Barbara belonged among legends—now the world does too.

Every Saturday from 8 to 11 a.m., the parking lot at 6525 College Street transforms into something that feels both old-fashioned and radical.

The Beaumont Farmers Market is a producers-only market, which means every person behind every table grew or made what they are selling. Nothing is trucked in from a warehouse. Everything comes from within 150 miles of the city. And the entire operation is run by volunteers.

Donna's Farm gives kids a free flower every week, no purchase required. Sherie's Garden gives every child a free jar of salsa with proof of straight A's. That detail is pure Beaumont. It is neighborly, slightly mischievous, and completely sincere.

The market runs February through December, and if you have not been yet, you are missing the most honest food transaction in the city.

A Garden Taking Root in Charlton-Pollard

While the farmers market has been the anchor, a new project is adding another layer. The Beaumont City Council recently approved a 1.5-acre lease on city-owned land near Irving Avenue for the Charlton-Pollard Community Garden.

Neighborhood Association President Christopher Jones says the vision has been in the making for over a decade. The garden will provide fresh produce, health education, and stronger community ties in a neighborhood that has waited patiently for both.

It is not just a garden. It is a statement about who decides what grows in this city.

The Garden That Has Been Feeding the Hungry Since 2012

On Liberty Street, across from St. Anne Catholic School, sits The Giving Field. It is a one-acre donation garden with a singular mission: every bit of organic produce harvested goes directly to area soup kitchens. No markup. No middleman. Just food going to people who need it.

Volunteers are welcome on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and the second Saturday of every month. And Donna's Farm, that same vendor handing out free flowers at the farmers market, partners with The Giving Field to make sure the harvest reaches even further.

The Pear Orchard Garden

On the corner of Bob and West Virginia Street, Chef Delilah Mackey-Johnson planted something in the historic Pear Orchard neighborhood with a belief that has proven right: somebody has to go first. The Pear Orchard Community Garden teaches children how to grow food and regularly gifts fresh produce to senior citizens in the area.

It started with one person deciding the neighborhood deserved better. That is still how it works.

What This Adds Up To

Saturday mornings at the farmers market. A one-acre plot on Liberty Street that has been quietly feeding the hungry for over a decade. A neighborhood garden in Pear Orchard built on the belief that community is about love. And 1.5 acres in Charlton-Pollard that a neighborhood waited ten years to see become real.

Beaumont is a city that grows things. And the people growing them are not waiting for permission.

The Beaumont Farmers Market is open every Saturday, 8 to 11 a.m., at 6525 College Street.
